Eyad Nassar comes this Ramadan season with a very interesting and intriguing series, “Selat Rahem”. Starring Yosra El Lozy, Asmaa Abulyazeid, and more, the series has a very sensible yet thrilling pace and intense scenes that surely bring out the best of the cast’s acting skills. But one of the best things about the show is the important themes it features and the controversial topics it tackles. Four episodes in, they’ve already covered so many overlooked issues in our society. Here is what we have recognized so far!

Complicated and Entangled Relationships:

Hossam has a confusing timeline with relationships, but besides that, his relationship with his ex, Gihan, is very questionable and, at this point, frustrating. He’s a mixture of unlikable behavior and arguable traits that will always give us material to debate and think about.

Surrogacy:

This might be one of the most controversial topics that this show tackles. Surrogacy has a lot of social taboos surrounding it. It also might be a newly introduced concept to the audience. The idea itself is scary and vague, and people usually have a lot of questions and concerns about it. “Selat Rahem” might be one of the only shows that tackle such issues without bias by providing evidence and arguments that can cater to the minds of the viewers.

Abortion:

Abortion is a worldwide sensitive and controversial topic. It hasn’t been directly tackled in an Egyptian series, especially from a religious approach. The series showed different points of view regarding the matter and left the verdict hanging on people’s opinions which started conversations on social media.

Extreme selfishness in marriage:

Though some might argue that Hossam makes the right decisions, or is at least trying to keep hold of everything with Layla, it’s very evident that most of his actions stem from a deep desire for selfish decisions. He wants to be a parent, but then he takes his own wife’s frozen eggs, despite her wish to get rid of them, to try out surrogacy without even discussing it with her. There are many situations where Hossam acted selfishly for his benefit, desires, and pleasure.
